Alsager people are "fed up " with Congleton MP
ALSAGER people are fed up with Congleton MP Ann Winterton bringing down the good name of the area.
So says Gary Poole, who has collected 300 signatures for a petition calling on Mrs Winterton to resign over the use of her Parliamentary allowances.
Mrs Winterton and husband Nicholas, MP for Macclesfield, denied breaking any rules in using allowances to pay rent on a flat they bought outright.
After paying off the mortgage on the London flat they put it into a trust, of which they are two of the trustees.
They said the arrangement was agreed by the Fees Office before they went ahead.
Mr Poole is Labour's Parliamentary spokesman in Congleton, and launched the petition - Winterton Must Go! - following articles in the national and local press about the use of the allowances by the Wintertons.
He collected 170 signatures in Congleton and Sandbach, and 130 were added to the total in Middlewich on Friday and Alsager on Saturday.
"The response from the people of Alsager was absolutely fantastic," said Mr Poole.
"They have made it clear they are fed up with Ann Winterton bringing down the good name of this area.
"They are decent people who feel let down by the antics of their MP, and are saying enough is enough.
"The people of Alsager can be very proud of the stand they are making for their area and for decency."
Mr Poole is to take his petition campaign door to door across Congleton Borough over the coming weeks.
